Lean Six Sigma which has been successfully used in many industries to improve the quality of products is based on the application of statistical tools to processes to improve metrics critical to the customer. Obtaining trustworthy Data by using reliable Measurement systems, and the use of Analytical tools, result in solutions that improves the overall quality. The intelligent use of inspection using Statistical Quality Control principles, such as confidence intervals, sampling inspection plans, randomization in testing allow for detection of the issues as they happen without a brute-force exhaustive search.
Statistical Process Control after the solution has been implemented makes sure that the gains are sustained. DMAIC (duh-may-ick) is a key component of Six Sigma.
The power of Lean Six Sigma lies in the design of the process such that these defects are prevented, and thus, quality is designed into the products and processes. The specific model for software is the DMADV (Define, Measure, Analyze, Design, and Verify, pronounced (duh-mad-vee). It has been posited that the Verification step is probably the most important step of the process.
